Jekyll Re-watch and That Thing Itching The Back Of My Brain.

Trust me... I'm a psychopath!

I decided a week back to do a Jekyll re-watch. Today I finished, watching an episode a day. I took time this time to soak in the story and enjoy myself. What did I find out? Well, in 2007 when it ran on BBCA, I missed two episodes. I don't know how, I don't know why, but there I am. So I was more than pleased that the story was fuller for me, due to my mistake.

If you haven't seen this series, do yourself a favor and watch it! It's available right now on Netflix and if not I am sure that the DVDs are out there.

The first thing that caught my attention was James Nesbitts acting. It's not just the playing of one character, it's his transformation into Hyde, he really becomes another person in this role. So much so that I wonder if the man is actually sane. I wondered if he might actually have multiple personality disorder. He's that good! I'm sure that makeup and such had a lot to do with it, but you can't make a look in the eye, an attitude, a swagger come out of a jar. His portrayal of both sides of the main character were absolutely fantastic.

I also wasn't a fan of Steven Moffat back then. I knew of him and that he was a writer/showrunner for Doctor Who, but I didn't really know him until he took over as head writer in 2008. He's a marvel by himself I think. I love what he's done with the Whoniverse, although you get a different review of the Moffat and his abilities from different Whovians. He also brought us Sherlock, and I was well pleased with that series. Very well done.

Back to Jekyll, it really made me think not just on a Geek/Fandom level but about myself. We all have a side that others don't get to see, and that was kind of the underlying theme of this show for me, and dumb as I am, was probably Moffats way to relate to the audience in the first place. Tom Jackman is a nice, uptight, family man it seems. Hyde is his naughty side. We've all got things we don't bring to light or parade in public. Guilty pleasures and all. Some of us have darker sides. I myself have a side that I keep down.

I do wonder what I would do to someone that tried
to hurt someone I loved...

Anger. I have a terrible temper. I try my very best to hold it at bay. I grit my teeth, I bite my tongue, I hold it until I think I am going to explode and then...HELOOOO DADDY!

Sometimes, he gets out. I can relate. There's no holding the dark side in at times. I would never hurt anyone I love, I never have. I may have hurt feelings, but physically I wouldn't lay a hand on anyone that I love. Or liked.

I do wonder what I would do to someone that tried to hurt someone I loved. One of my family, one of my friends.

Which is another part of this series that really hit home with me. Hyde, the dark side of Doctor Jackman, isn't hate and rage, isn't really even evil. He's a basic truth in all of us. What we would be without the rules of society. What we would do if we just let it all hang out. He's something way more powerful, more primal. But you have to watch the show to find that out. I don't like to spoil. Geek code I guess.

The ones I love, past and present, are sacred to me. There are some ties that you can never break, no matter how hard you try. Those who are true to you earn it and they always have that marker they can call in. The ones who have earned it won't use that or take it for granted. They would only call in that marker if necessary.

The rest of the people in your life, the ones that you nod to, say hi to in passing, but don't know a thing about, would never understand that bond with you.

It's always there. You might thing you lose it, but when you pass someone that was once a loved one or a friend and you feel that ache, that little thing that aggravates you. That hurt that you can't explain even though your sensible mind tells you not to care.

Love is that thing. It's what keeps us in check, and what makes us lose our minds.
